Las Vegas native earns ARCA Series ROTY Title

In one of the closest Rookie of the Year battles in ARCA Racing Series history, 18-year-old Riley Herbst came from two points behind Gus Dean entering the season finale to take the SCOTT Rookie title by a margin of four points. Dean finished second, with Bret Holmes rounding out the top three in the Rookie battle, just 14 points behind Herbst.
Not old enough to run the season opener at Daytona to start the year, Herbst worked quickly to make up the deficit, collecting four top 10 finishes through his first five races of the year. Then, at Pocono Raceway in June, the Las Vegas, Nevada native broke through for his first Series win, leading the final 44 laps of the General Tire #AnywhereIsPossible 200.
In 19 total starts this season Herbst earned six top-5 and 10 top-ten finishes. Besides his victory at Pocono Raceway, other season highlights include 2nd place finishes at both the second Pocono race and on the Road America road course. He captured a pair of 3rd place finished on the Elko Speedway and Madison International Speedway short tracks. He ended the year at 5th in the overall championship standings.
“We set out to win the Rookie of the Year and we accomplished that goal,” Herbst commented. “We wanted more out of this year but, all in all, it was a successful season. We take what we learned and move onto next year. I’d like to thank all my guys at Joe Gibbs Racing…they’re the best at what they do. They don’t cut corners and always bring a car capable of winning. As I get more up to speed, I know we can win more races. Big thanks to SCOTT for the Rookie of the Year…appreciate what they do for ARCA.”
Herbst announced earlier this year that he, along with veteran crew chief Shannon Rursch, will be returning to the ARCA Racing Series with Joe Gibbs Racing next year. The 2018 ARCA Racing Series season kicks off with the Lucas Oil 200 at Daytona International Speedway on February 10th.
